Elko joined the Institute in September 2014 as the intern for the Global Governance program. He holds a master’s degree in International Relations: European Integration from the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), and previously studied at the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris in France. He focused on democratic transitions and foreign policy/diplomacy in particular. As a student he organized two conferences on democracy and Europeanisation.
Elko undertook various intern positions throughout Europe. He worked on Trade, Development and Human Rights at the EU Delegation to the United Nations in Geneva, on political affairs at the Dutch embassy in Paris and on European affairs at a Dutch NGO. Prior to joining the Institute, he initiated a UN youth conference in Geneva that fostered dialogue between young graduates and ambassadors on the future of the UN. During these experiences he developed a particular interest in international cooperation between different actors, including governments, companies and NGO’s.
Originally from the Netherlands, he speaks Dutch, English, French, basic German and studies Russian.
