Masami Robert Remkes served as the intern for the Rule of Law program in Autumn/Winter 2015. He is half Dutch and half Japanese and two-times cum laude graduate of the University of Utrecht. After graduating from the Utrecht Law College (honours track of the LLB in Jurisprudence), he pursued a LLM in Public International Law and specialised in conflict and security law. As a student assistant, he assisted in the work on the new Commentary on the Chemical Weapons Convention and has since further specialised in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation.
He previously interned with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) where he conducted legal research on riot-control agents and incapacitants, and drafted legal backgrounders in preparation of meetings of the States Parties. He gained further insight into verification regimes at the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) where he drafted legal analyses pertaining to on-site inspections.
