New Tribunal Established in The Hague to Investigate Crimes Committed in Kosovo

Hague Institute Senior Researcher Jill Coster van Voorhout comments on the new international tribunal established in The Hague. The tribunal will investigate crimes committed by members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the Kosovo war. At the time, Hashim Thaçi, current president of Kosovo, was a guerrilla leader for the KLA. Read the article in the Volkskrant.

In March 2015, Mr. Thaçi discussed at The Hague Institute the looming possibility of an investigation and the importance of reconciliation and inter-ethnic understanding in Kosovo.

“We need to rewrite a new history for Kosovo and the region…The past is in the past. We will not forget but we will not take revenge. Reconciliation is the only way forward and it will happen.”

Hashim Thaçi, President of Kosovo at the Institute in March 2015

On Monday, 19 September, the Institute will convene a conversation on the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals and the Kosovo Specialist Chambers as new models of tribunals.

Dr. Abi Williams, President of The Hague Institute, will lead the conversation with Judge Theodor Meron, President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals; Dr. Fidelma Donlon, Registrar of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers; and Prof. Dr. Carsten Stahn, Chair of International Criminal Law and Global Justice and Programme Director of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden University. Learn more about the event
